Decode Vehicle Identification Number to specs
The vin decoder works like this: it decodes the 17-character VIN into World Manufacturer Identifier, vehicle attributes from positions 4-8, check-digit validation via the 9th character, model year and plant. Everything happens on your device - the input never leaves your tab unless the tool clearly states it performs a server-side lookup.

It identifies the vehicle specification, not ownership, accident history or mileage - those require a history report service.
North American and EU VINs carry one; some other markets skip position 9 validation.
It is a computed checksum over the other characters - a mismatch almost always means a typo or an altered VIN, which is worth knowing before you trust any paperwork.
North American rules put vehicle attributes (body, engine, series) in those positions while European makers often use them as free-form manufacturer codes - the decoder labels which standard it applied.
