Measure your typing speed in WPM with live accuracy tracking
What is the Typing Speed Test?
The typing speed test works like this: it runs a timed typing drill on a stream of the 220 most common English words, measuring net WPM (correct characters ÷ 5 per minute), raw WPM (everything you typed, mistakes included) and character-level accuracy, with per-character colouring so you can see exactly where errors happen. Everything happens on your device - the input never leaves your tab unless the tool clearly states it performs a server-side lookup.
How to use the Typing Speed Test
Pick a duration - 15 or 30 seconds for a quick check, 60 or 120 seconds for the number employers and typing certificates actually recognise.
Press Start and type the shown words exactly, including the spaces between them.
Watch the live WPM counter while typing - it only counts correct characters, the way standard tests score.
Read the results: net WPM is the headline number, but accuracy matters more for real work.
Features
Net vs raw WPM shown separately - net subtracts mistakes, raw shows your true keystroke speed
Per-character feedback: correct characters darken, wrong ones turn red, the next one pulses
15/30/60/120-second durations - 60s is the standard comparison length
Fresh random word order every run, so you cannot memorise the text
Common mistakes to avoid
Chasing speed before accuracy - typing at 95 WPM with 80% accuracy is slower in practice than 60 WPM at 99%
Looking down at the keyboard during the test - the number is only honest if it reflects touch typing
Correcting every mistake as you go - standard tests count a corrected word as correct, but over-correcting wrecks your rhythm; fix only when it is a real word

Frequently asked questions
What is a good typing speed?
The average adult types 38-40 WPM. 55-65 WPM is considered fast for general work, 80+ is professional transcriptionist territory, and 100+ WPM is competitive typist level. For most jobs, 50 WPM at 95%+ accuracy is more than enough.
Why divide characters by 5 to get words?
It is the industry convention: the average English word plus its trailing space is about five characters. Every major typing test (Monkeytype, 10FastFingers, TypingTest.com) uses the same standard, so scores are comparable across sites.
Does this test save my results anywhere?
No. The test runs entirely in your browser tab and results exist only on screen - refreshing the page erases them. There is no account, no leaderboard upload and no keystroke logging.
Why did my WPM drop when I made mistakes?
Net WPM only counts correct characters, so a mistake costs you both the wrong keystroke and the correction time. That is intentional: it mirrors real-world work where errors must be fixed before anything ships.
