Count string length in characters and bytes
The string length works like this: it counts characters, code points and bytes simultaneously - three numbers that disagree exactly when emoji or accents are present. Everything happens on your device - the input never leaves your tab unless the tool clearly states it performs a server-side lookup.
| Input | Result |
|---|---|
| "👋🏽" | 2 UTF-16 units · 1+2 grapheme clusters · 8 bytes |
Text processing happens in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
JavaScript strings count UTF-16 units, databases count bytes, and humans count visible symbols. Only when text is plain ASCII do all three agree.
A flag emoji is 2 code points but often 8 bytes in UTF-8 and 1 visible character - the three counters let you see exactly where a length limit (SMS, tweet, database column) actually bites.
The visible-character count - platforms measure what a reader sees, not the underlying bytes, so a string full of emoji counts far less than its byte length suggests.
