Extract all text from a PDF and copy or download it as plain text
What is the PDF Text Extractor?
The pdf text extractor works like this: it opens a PDF locally with the pdf.js engine, walks every page’s text layer and rebuilds it into readable lines ordered by their real coordinates, then lets you copy the whole document or download it as a .txt file. Everything happens on your device - the input never leaves your tab unless the tool clearly states it performs a server-side lookup.
How to use the PDF Text Extractor
Drop a PDF onto the box or click to pick one - the file opens in your browser, not on a server.
Wait for the progress bar; each page’s text appears under its page number as it is read.
Use Copy all text for the clipboard, or Download as .txt for a file.
Pages that show "no extractable text" are scanned images - use an OCR tool for those instead.
Features
Coordinate-aware line reconstruction: words join into lines in true reading order, not the arbitrary order inside the PDF
Per-page breakdown with character counts, so you can grab just one page’s text
Handles multi-hundred-page documents with live progress
100% local processing - the PDF never leaves your device
Common mistakes to avoid
Expecting text from a scanned PDF - a scan is a photo of text; only OCR can read it
Assuming extraction preserves layout - columns, tables and footnotes become plain sequential text
Re-uploading confidential PDFs to random online converters when a local extractor does the same job with zero exposure
Examples
Input
Result
20-page report.pdf
Text extracted: all 20 pages, 46,318 characters, downloaded as report.txt
Best used for
Recovering text from reports, statements and e-books for editing
Extracting quotes and figures from PDF research papers
Turning multi-page PDF documents into searchable plain text
Confidential documents that must not be uploaded to converter sites
Privacy
The PDF is parsed entirely in your browser by a bundled copy of pdf.js. No upload, no server processing, no retention.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my scanned PDF return no text?
A scan contains images, not text objects. This tool reads the text layer that real digital PDFs carry. For scans, use an OCR (optical character recognition) tool such as the image-to-text options here or dedicated OCR software.
Are tables extracted as tables?
No - text comes out as lines in reading order, which flattens tables into rows of words. For structured data, copy the text and re-align it, or use a spreadsheet-oriented converter.
Is there a page or size limit?
Only your device’s memory. Because processing happens in your browser, even large PDFs work - but very large documents (thousands of pages) can take a while and use significant RAM.
Can it extract text from a password-protected PDF?
No. If a PDF requires a password to open, the extraction fails with an error - you must unlock it first with the owner password.
